3 Steps to Reduce Your Belongings for a Move

By DeVries Family Moving & Storage

The worst part of moving is usually the packing and unpacking. When you are moving, you really get to see how much stuff you have. I’m sure by your tenth trip you’ll be thinking, “I have too much stuff.” There are many reasons to simplify your life and minimize the amount of stuff you have, but a move may be the catalyst you need to get started.

As Port St. Lucie residential movers, we have seen plenty of people get aggravated about how much stuff they have. Even if they aren’t downsizing, many wish they downsized their belongings. As you prepare for your upcoming move, here are some tips to help you minimize your life:

  1. Take Inventory- The easiest way to see what you need to get rid of is to get it all out on the table. Go one area at a time. Take the bedroom closet for example. Empty the entire closet and take inventory of your belongings.
  2. Sort and Categorize- The next step is to sort through your inventory and put items into categories. Create toss, donate, maybe, and keep piles for your belongings. For items in bad conditioned that got shoved to the back of the closet, throw them in the toss section. All of those clothes that you wore once and didn’t love, stick them in the donate. If you have a few items that give you pause, you can place in the maybe pile.
  3. Address that Maybe Box- Whether it’s the maybe box you created in step two or it’s the drawer that slowly turned into your home for semi-unwanted items, it’s time to address it. Go through the box and think about the last time you used that item. Do you actually like it or are you just afraid to let it go? If you aren’t sure, think about life without it. If you won’t miss it, get rid of it.

Moving is difficult enough without carrying decades of unused items around from house to house. Simplify your move by getting rid of these extra belongings and giving them to a nonprofit organization that will ensure they are given to people who will love them.
